In Cuba in the mid-1980s, anyone diagnosed with HIV/AIDS would be sent to a detention camp managed by the military. Former boxing champion Horacio Romero has been appointed as the personal caregiver for troublemaker patient Daniel. Despite their initial distrust and ignorance, the two formed a Platonic bond that made them better people. "Companion" shows the shame of homosexual and heterosexual patients in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. This eye-opening drama found friendship and sympathy in a little-known chapter in Cuban history.
